PIN in Saint Petersburg
The latest developments in negotiation research, the policy conclusions of the Arab Spring project and the second workshop of the reconciliation project – these very interesting events are scheduled for the two-day visit (23-24 May 2013) of the Processes of International Negotiation (PIN) to the School of International Negotiations of the Saint Petersburg State University.
About the Event
PIN organizes roadshows on a yearly basis. The first roadshow of 2013 will take place in the morning of 23 May and will bring together the majority of the PIN Steering Committee. Fen Hampson will address the new challenges for international multilateral negotiations, Mikhail Troitskiy will speak on the Russia-US arms control negotiations and Guy O. Faure will discuss asymmetrical negotiations with a focus on dealing with terrorists. Along with the PIN SC members, two scholars from Germany, Andreas Lange and Martin Kesternich, will present their findings from their recent research project on climate change negotiations.
I. William Zartman will deliver a presentation on the policy conclusions of Negotiations in Transitions (the PIN project about the Arab Spring) in an afternoon seminar on 23 May. These conclusions will be available later this year as a Clingendael Policy Brief. The full book of the project – working title: "Intifidat: Negotiations in the shadow of social movements" –, edited by professor Zartman, is expected to be published in early 2014, featuring case studies from most Arab Spring countries.
The visit of PIN wraps up on the morning of 24 May with the second workshop of the reconciliation project (the first workshop took place in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in October 2012). During the workshop, project conveners Mark Anstey and Valerie Rosoux will discuss power and timing, while Rudolf Schüssler will focuss on ethics, Moty Cristal on security issues and Moti Melamud on the Israeli-German case.
